Construction permitting in the City of Houston continued to set records in April. The running 12-month total topped $6.8 billion, the highest value in GHP records dating back to January ’02. The $6.8 billion represents a 28.2 percent increase from $5.3 billion in permits issued over the same 12-month period in ’13.
- Residential permit values rose from $1.9 billion to $2.5 billion, a 32.3 percent increase.
- Nonresidential permits grew from $3.4 billion to $4.3 billion, a 25.8 percent increase.
The 12-month total was bolstered by exceptional activity in the month of April.
The City of Houston issued building permits totaling $976.9 million in April, a 126.2 percent increase from the $431.9 million issued in April ’13. This was the highest monthly permit activity value on record for the city of Houston.
Non-residential permits rose 158.0 percent from $261.6 million in April ’13 to $674.8 million in April ’14.
- Permits for office buildings increased from $997,500 in April ’13 to $99.5 million in April ’14.
- Permits for schools and educational buildings increased from $1.0 million in April ’13 to $51.4 million in April ’14.
Residential permits increased 77.4 percent from $170.3 million in April ’13 to $302.1 million in April ’14.
- Multi-family permits more than quadrupled from $34.9 million in April ’13 to $141.7 million in April ’14, accounting for all of the year-over-year growth in residential permits.
