The Houston Association of REALTORS® (HAR) Governmental Affairs and TREPAC Departments, staffed by Dana Kervin, Chief Political Strategist, and Karen Driscoll, TREPAC Director, hosted a REALTOR® Party Federal Legislative Discussion designed to prepare HAR members for their annual congressional visits to Washington, D. C. scheduled for May 11 and 12.
Leading the discussion was National Association of REALTORS’ (NAR) Deputy Chief Lobbyist Jamie Gregory, who is based in Washington. The discussion was important not only for HAR members to hear first-hand from their Washington lobbyist, but to also have face time with their U. S. Representatives.
Taking the podium first was Congressman Al Green, who serves on the Financial Services Committee. Next up was Congressman John Culberson, who serves on the Appropriations Committee. Congressman Culberson was followed by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee who displayed a model of a “bullet train” which she had acquired from a recent high-speed rail business trip to Japan.
The audience of about 100 left with a clearer understanding of the federal issues before Congress, including flood insurance, lending and tax policies and patent reform, and were better prepared for their citizen lobbyist roles and Capitol Hill meetings.
